Written by and for those with inadequate singing voices.

OpeningD, A, G, B, C, F, G, A

I’d be the first to criticize D, A
A voice I can’t abide G, B
And yet I sit before youC, F
Committing vocal homicide G, A
My friends say: “keep your day job…
Your singing is a joke”
It’s not so much a song as it’s a “croak”C, F, G, A-disheveled (technically Am9)

A special friend lamented once
He swore he’d never sing
Tho’t seemed, to sing with beauty
He’d have given anything
I told him “laughter is your song”
His ego for to stroke
He busted out a grin and chuckled “croak”

There’s nothing like a voice that soars
Or calms a noisy room
A voice can turn a fear to cheer
Or lift a pallid gloom
But me, perhaps I yelled too loud
Or maybe it was smoke
But when I open up my heart
My vocal chords just “croak”

I’ve traveled all around the earth
I’ve listened to the muse
I’ve sampled music everywhere
And I’ve sought out others’ views
But whether English gentleman
Or average Cockney bloke
They all show fear, when in their ear
They hear my horrid “croak”

So please excuse my insolence
And insubordination
The voice you hear could be improved
By layers of insulation
You’ve all been very tolerant
And I hope you’ll not regret
You’re nearly done your suffering andC, F
Some day you may forget G, A

So as the agony subsides
And your pain and sorrow ends I ask
What’s a little torture
Between spouses or twixt friends
Did you know that the first instrument
Was built to be a cloak
By a person who loved musicC, F
And was dressing up… a “croak” G, Eb major7, Ab major7, A-disheveled
